Ganesh was raped as a teenager by a relative and infected with HIV. There are 87,000 new infections in India every year. On top of that, he was rejected by his family because he was too ill and too weak to work. At the beginning, Ganesh could not find the help he urgently needed because he is gay: In a state hospital, he was refused treatment, no doctor would touch him. Ganesh almost died. Today, he runs a clinic for queer people. The hospital specializes in HIV treatment and offers free tests, education and medication. “Having HIV is not a crime”, says Ganesh. He has dedicated his life to the treatment of the virus in order to save the lives of others. And although Ganesh was sent away from his family, he supports his mother and sister financially.
