We, Gina Bolle, Francesco Giordano, Maria Christoph and Stefanie Witterauf, are a team of two photographers and two journalists, all based in Munich, Germany. All of us are working for different media outlets, magazines and for public service broadcasting.
In 2019 we functioned together as a team for the first time. We created a magazine together with refugees from the LGBTIQ community from all around the globe that had to leave their home countries because of their sexual orientation and identity. And found a new home in Germany. "Rainbow Refugees (Stories)” is reconstructing their stories of persecution, of pain but also of new hope. We learned a lot, especially about how to build up a strong team of experts in different areas such as photography and journalism.
We saw it as necessary and helpful to approach the project 377. Inside India's Queer Community as a team again. With our new project we have now gone one step further: We went to a place where change is taking place, where the LGBTIQ community gets a face and where people dare to live and stand openly with themselves – with who they love and want to share their future after the discriminating article 377 was abolished.
We focused on different personalities, they took us by the hand and led us through their daily life in four different areas of India. We there found out: How has the situation changed since autumn 2018? Which difficulties do still exist? India as a destination was a good example for us to work on this topic. We are fascinated by the progress in the Queer Communities around the world in dealing with LGBTIQ and discovered lots of new facets. With our project "377. Inside India's Queer Community" we strive to bring these insights to the public.
